How to Rotate Players in Pickleball

The key to a successful pickleball session is making sure everyone gets fair playing time. This calculator helps you figure out the math before you start.

The Golden Ratio: 4 Players per Court

Doubles pickleball needs exactly 4 players per court. If you have 12 players and 3 courts, everyone plays every round. But with 16 players and 3 courts? 4 people sit out each round.

Managing Sit-Outs Fairly

  • 1-4 sit-outs: Easy to manage. Rotate who sits each round.
  • 5-8 sit-outs: Consider "King of the Court" format where winners stay.
  • 8+ sit-outs: Split into two sessions or add courts.

Automate This

Hey Pickle automatically manages rotations, tracks who's played, and ensures everyone gets fair court time. No spreadsheets needed.

Common Questions

What's the ideal player-to-court ratio?

Ideally 4 players per court (doubles). With 5-6 per court, you have a small rotation. Beyond 8 per court, wait times get frustrating.

How do I handle odd numbers?

With an odd number, one person always sits out. Rotate systematically so everyone sits out equally. Or have the sit-out ref/score the current game.

Timed games vs. playing to a score?

Timed games (10-15 min) keep rotations predictable. Score-based games (to 11 or 15) can run long if evenly matched. For group play, timed is usually better.
